JetBlue is the country’s sixth-largest carrier, and Spirit ranks seventh. Photo: Wilfredo Lee/Associated PressA federal judge on Tuesday blocked JetBlue Airways from acquiring Spirit Airlines , agreeing with the Justice Department that the $3.8 billion deal would eliminate a competitor important to price-conscious travelers. The Justice Department said JetBlue’s purchase of Spirit would remove an ultra-low-cost carrier that benefits travelers and puts pressure on other airlines to keep down fares. Removing Spirit as a rival would free JetBlue to raise prices by as much as 30%, the government said. JetBlue is the country’s sixth-largest carrier, and Spirit ranks seventh.

If the rest of the year is an indicator, fliers taking to the air at Thanksgiving time can expect crowding. Photo: Mario Tama/Getty ImagesThis isn’t the Thanksgiving to cut it close at the airport. In a year that has already seen some of the busiest days on record at U.S. airports, Thanksgiving is expected to be a standout. Airlines and the Transportation SecurityAdministration are anticipating record numbers of passengers.

Cargo pilots typically have fixed schedules and fewer legs to fly in a day compared with their counterparts at passenger airlines. Photo: Jon Cherry/Getty ImagesThe next recruiting hotspot for U.S. airlines in need of experienced pilots is FedEx and United Parcel Service . PSA Airlines, a regional carrier owned by American , is offering bonuses totaling $250,000 for UPS and FedEx pilots who can come work as captains and help fill a gap that has forced PSA to keep planes grounded and curtail service to some cities.

Airlines’ hiring binge has suddenly thrust many pilots behind the controls of different, bigger planes than they are used to flying. That rapid advancement to new cockpit seats is fueling anxieties over whether pilots’ newness to certain aircraft could lead to more minor mishaps that go unnoticed by the flying public—or more serious incidents and accidents.

One founder building ChatGPT add-ons says he's "bracing" for other changes from OpenAI. Little-guy developers building complementary services to OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot have just found this out the hard way. As several techies noticed, that's pretty much killed off a bunch of startups that build "ChatGPT wrapper" apps that did precisely that. Other wrapper apps can create ad copy, sales materials, and social media posts. As one anonymous venture capitalist, who has backed a ChatGPT wrapper startup put it to Insider: "Just wait until ChatGPT has an outage and see which emperors have no clothes."

An off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly tried to disable an aircraft’s engines while riding in the cockpit jump seat on a regional flight. Photo: Aubrey Gavello/Local News X/TMX via APFederal authorities suggested psychedelic mushrooms and depression may have played a role in an off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot’s alleged attempt to shut down an airplane’s engines midflight. The details came as federal prosecutors accused Joseph David Emerson on Tuesday of interfering with flight crew members and attendants on a flight last weekend, which eventually landed safely in Portland, Ore.

In response to complaints from fliers, Delta is looking to make it less expensive to earn certain perks.
